5 Easy Steps to Studying Abroad


As the Fall 2013 semester gets into gear, students interested in studying abroad for Spring 2014, are already feeling the stress to submit their applications for Spring 2014 semester.

In case you may be on the fence about the experience, here’s a simple 5 step solution to keep you sane during the application process.

Research

If you’re considering going abroad then you have probably read about the 1,000’s of programs available. From a semester at sea to studying you Jewish heritage in Israel there is definitely an opportunity out there. Sure, they all sound good on paper but take the time to ensure that the program really meets your academic and personal goals.

Apply

Once you’ve narrowed down your search, submit your application to your top 3 places. Your application to the host program (not your school) should be done as soon as possible or at least a few months prior to the application deadline. Review the application carefully. In many cases, the host college should For all other programs, contact the program administrator directly for application questions and deadline.

Credit Approval

Once you’ve applied, now it’s time to go to the academic or study abroad adviser as soon as possible. They will know which classes will be approved while studying abroad. All of the classes that you intend taking must be approved before you get on the plane. Otherwise, your credits abroad may not get transferred back. Attempting to get the classes approved after you’ve returned is very difficult, so be organized and handle this before.

Financial Aid

This is the area that is the toughest to handle. Many students feel that studying abroad is inaccessible because of the costs, but depending on the program, studying abroad is comparable to attending classes on your campus. Financial aid applications are long and often involve many pieces of information from your parents. That being said, there are many scholarships, grants, federal or international loans out there. In many cases, there are sufficient scholarships to cover a significant piece of your study abroad.

Prepare for Your Trip

After getting accepted and your classes have been approved, you can start planning your actual trip.

Follow these steps:

  1. Get your passport (and visa if necessary)

  2. Learn about health and property insurance

  3. Get a ticket

  4. Get travel insurance

  5. Get your International Student ID

  6. Pack
